Program Overview

LeTourneau University’s Kinesiology Department is proud to partner with the Texas State Athletic Trainers’ Association (TSATA) to offer an Apprenticeship route toward licensure as an athletic trainer in Texas.

Why This Apprenticeship Route?

  • Unlike a traditional undergraduate + master’s path, the TSATA-endorsed apprenticeship route emphasizes hands-on clinical experience in sport settings, supervised by licensed professionals. As per Texas regulations, the apprenticeship method permits licensure under the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) for students who complete a minimum of 1,800 training hours during at least five fall and/or spring semesters.
  • TSATA offers an “Endorsement” process for such apprenticeship programs: endorsement signifies that the program is committed to teaching the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required by the TDLR exam. tsata.com
  • This route at LeTourneau gives our students immediate, applied exposure across sports contexts, mentorship opportunities with licensed athletic trainers, and aligns with the licensure options specific to Texas.

Program Highlights

  • Students admitted into the Athletic Training Concentration will complete their bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology (Athletic Training concentration) alongside the apprenticeship.
  • Clinical apprenticeship hours are completed on both our LeTourneau campus and other sport teams, clinics, and facilities under the supervision of licensed athletic trainers.
  • The program embeds coursework in anatomy/physiology, exercise physiology, injury prevention and care, therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation, and sport-specific practice. (These align with TDLR’s required course-areas.)
