The talk will focus on the history of science in the Christian university, mostly considering the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in the United States. It will consider the fusion of empirical, Baconian, “common sense” Scottish Enlightenment assumptions with evangelical Christianity in the nineteenth century, consider how this synthesis fell apart in the late nineteenth century, and reflect on the creation of the modern Christian college and the place of science within the curriculum.
