Student Opportunities

PHAGES Project

LETU is one of seventy universities nationwide invited to participate in the Science Education Alliance's PHAGES program, which is sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

The SEA-PHAGES program offers students:

  • ownership of a project
  • a chance to publish and contribute to the scientific community
  • regular milestones to measure progress
  • authentic scientific discovery

Students in General Biology will be engaged in meaningful research. They will be isolating previously unidentified viruses from the environment, characterizing them, and sequencing and annotating their genomes. Students will have the opportunity to present the results of their research at academic conferences and to publish their data in scientific journals.

Every year, biology students are able to gain knowledge and insight through completing field-related internships.

There are thousands of internship opportunities around the nation. A few of our alumni have interned at places including:

Wheels Project

If you are attracted to medicine or physical therapy and have an interest in travel and humanitarian work, combine your interests by working with our Wheels team!

The goal of the Wheels research team is to provide objective data on the functionality of wheelchairs in less-resourced settings. This data will provide feedback to manufacturers, which will enable them to modify designs, and will help clinicians make better prescriptions of wheelchairs.

Biology and kinesiology students work under the supervision of Karen Rispin to design outcomes measure protocols, and travel with Wheels to apply their work. In doing so, they make a difference in many children's lives.
