Mark Rice (Aviation & Electrical Engineering Technology, '82) retired on 1 Nov '2025. The last ten years have been the most fulfilling and challenging, taking me abroad several times to various places. But the USAF customers that I've worked with for several years were not happy about me disappearing. They wanted to 'keep me around' somehow. There's another company that provides equipment to the USAF that I worked closely with and I know the staff quite well. This equipment supplier company asked me about 2 years ago to join them, so finally last fall, I did, but in a consultant role, part-time. This arrangement allows me to continue being an asset to the USAF which satisfies them, and I am receiving a pension which satisfies me along with keeping me close to the challenges & opportunities to help (which I can't seem to find an easy way to retire from that).

Jason Saler (Computer Science, '17) is now working as a Field Test Engineer with Glydways, a self-driving transit system . I've been in the autonomous car industry now for almost 7 years, previously working for General Motors at their Subsidiary Cruise. Glydways is building an autonomous car as well called a Glydcar, but unlike Cruise and most other AV companies (Waymo, Zoox, Aurora, etc), Glydways will not operate the vehicles on public roads, but instead on set guide ways, which reduces complexity, allows close distance between vehicles and maximizes capacity. This would be similar in nature to a public train or subway system except that it requires much less infrastructure and overhead cost to implement, making it an attractive solution for cities and public transit organizations while also giving the rider a more comfortable and quicker transit solution. IE: Not crammed with hundreds of other people, rider gets their own space and each car goes directly where the rider needs instead of stopping at each station. Glydways' approach is the only AV solution that actually reduces the number of vehicles on the public roads, where most others replace a human driving a car with a human riding in an autonomous car at a 1:1 ratio which does not solve the traffic and congestion we face in cities today. I believe that if we are successful, Glydways will help reduce congestion in urban roads and give people an affordable, safe and quick way to get around in cities. My role specifically is testing new software and hardware on the Glydcars by running them through various maneuvers and scenarios both manually with a remote contol and autonomously. Tests will vary based on what needs to be tested, but always looking for regressions, does the new software or hardware perform worse or better than before, does it do what the design intent states, does it meet our safety standards etc.
