The Heart of Student Life

The Student Life department cares about the whole health of every student—mind, body and spirit. Academics at any university is a top priority but specifically at LeTourneau, our faculty and staff care about the spiritual and relational well-being of every student as well. We incorporate Christ in everything we do, and we are intentional about setting aside time throughout the week for students to engage in new activities and meet new friends or cultivate their current friendships.

There are many opportunities on campus to foster creativity outside of the classroom. Our YellowJacket Activity Council (YAC) hosts fun events almost every Friday. From Bob Ross painting nights to annual campus-wide dances, there is something for everyone.

One of the biggest events of the year is our Hootenanny show. Throughout our history, our students have put on a talent and variety show during the year.  In the mid-1960s, this student favorite became formalized as Hootenanny - a night of laughter, fun, and celebration - in which everything, from production to hosting to the talent and skits, is done by students.

In addition to this night of laughter and fun, Hootenanny Weekend is an opportunity for students to have a blast before the final push to the end of the semester and for alumni, parents, and family to have fun and make lasting memories.

“My favorite part about being the YAC president is getting to
meet new people. I love getting to see new freshman come in and
get to experience the YAC events for the first time. Whether it’s
RG’s block party or Silver Steer Showdown, being able to host
these events and seeing new interactions take place makes the event
so amazing. Even during the spring semester with Hootenanny,
getting to meet different people and cultivate community is
incredible to witness.”

On top of YAC events, students are encouraged by their floormates to interact and build connections with the community they are in close contact with daily. Every floor has their own traditions and activities that they participate in, and it is beautiful to see the cherished memories made within dorm culture.

“My friends on my floor [Davis 2] have been the people
I hang out with the most. They have invested in me, and I’ve
invested in those relationships. We love to play different types of games
and  hang out together all the time. They have helped form me into
who I am today. I also think the girls on my sister floor
[Davis 3] are great. We all have a solid friend foundation
I’ve really appreciated it throughout my four years here.”

The most important aspect of Student Life is to aid in the spiritual development of students. With weekly chapel services and Sunday night prayer and praise, students can grow in the relationship with Christ during their undergraduate careers.

Through devotionals and being an SLA [Spiritual Life Assistant]
on my [dorm] floor, I've been able to walk with people
and see them incarnation-ally, being there in moments where they
are really struggling, or celebrating victories with them or just
having regular conversation and living that out and learning
things that I can then implement in my actual life outside the
classroom… people here truly love the Lord and desire
to live lives that glorify Him… and that's so uplifting and
encouraging to see.”
