LETU Procedure in Response to Copyright Notices

LeTourneau University does not actively search for instances of copyrighted infringement. However, we do respond to complaints about inappropriate use of the LETU network. Copyright owners do actively search for copyright infringements of their works and send DMCA take-down notices to LeTourneau University.

LeTourneau University, as a private educational institution, allows a short time for individuals to educate themselves in copyright law and to either take down the materials themselves or produce whatever documented permission they have to share the files.

LeTourneau University's procedure in response to copyright notices, and user consequences of these actions, are outlined below.

IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST COPYRIGHT VIOLATION NOTICE:

  • You are sent a "First Offense" e-mail, including a copy of the complaint from the copyright holder, and given 36 hours to complete the tutorial and quiz.
  • If you are a student, a $50 cost-recovery fine is applied to your student account.

If you take the quiz within 36 hours and pass:

  • The incident is closed.

If you do not take the quiz or do not pass within 36 hours:

  • Your computer is blocked from accessing the LETU network, and you will be unable to register additional devices.
  • You are given one week to pass the tutorial and quiz. If you have not passed the quiz at the end of one week, the incident is referred to the appropriate disciplinary office. For students, this is the Dean of Students; for staff, this is a department head and Human Resources; for faculty, this is a department chair and the Executive VP for Academic Affairs.
  • For students, access to the LETU network, once blocked, will only be re-enabled with permission by the Dean of Students.

IF THIS IS YOUR SECOND COPYRIGHT VIOLATION NOTICE:

  • You are sent a "Second Offense" e-mail, including a copy of the complaint from the copyright holder, and required to complete the tutorial and quiz.
  • If you are a student, a $100 cost-recovery fine is applied to your student account.
  • Your ability to attach a personal computing device to the LETU network is blocked immediately, and it will remain blocked for at least two weeks and until you pass the quiz.
  • You are referred to the appropriate disciplinary office for disciplinary probation.

IF YOU RECEIVE A THIRD COPYRIGHT VIOLATION NOTICE:

  • You are sent a "Third Offense" e-mail, including a copy of the complaint from the copyright holder.
  • If you are a student, a $150 cost-recovery fine is applied to your student account.
  • Your ability to connect personal computing devices to the LETU network is blocked permanently, for the duration of the academic year. This will likely affect any employment at LETU that requires access to LETU IT resources.
  • You are referred to the appropriate disciplinary office for further disciplinary probation, including potential suspension.
