REPORTS TO: Director for Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services
SCHEDULE: Office hours are primarily weekdays, but responsibilities require additional hours and flexibility that can include evenings and weekends.

The qualified candidate will be successful in an environment with a wide variety of technical demands and minimal supervision. Excellent, proactive communication will be essential to success. The primary responsibilities may include:


  • Serve as the primary administrator of all University computer networks, including Local Area, Wide Area, Wireless, and other systems.
  • Serve as the primary network security architect for campus networks and services in close consultation with the Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services team.
  • Coordinate the selection, purchase, deployment, configuration, and maintenance of all network equipment, including switches, routers, firewalls, and other gateway devices, wireless access points, appliances, and other systems involved with the operation of the network.
  • Must select, purchase, deployment, configuration, and maintenance of physical and virtual server systems.
  • Must select, purchase, deployment, configuration, and maintenance of storage area network and backup systems.
  • Maintain and develop data center infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with the Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services team on design, bidding, sizing, and planning for Internet, WAN, and other 3rd party connectivity services.
  • Coordinate with the Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services team on cabling and infrastructure changes or additions needed for ongoing network operation.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to the Network Engineers in the day-to-day support and troubleshooting of network infrastructure, including routers, switches, security appliances, central servers, and server software (including messaging systems and authentication services).
  • Support network needs of campus network-based voice and video systems.
  • Extensive project management of short and long-term projects involving equipment selection, deployment, and reallocation
  • Coordinate, in conjunction with the Associate Director for Networks, personnel, and student worker resources to accomplish projects and tasks.
  • Monitor alerting and reporting systems.
  • Regular and effective communication with end-users as well as the Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services team, and other members of the Information Technology department about projects, tasks, and maintenance events.
  • Accept additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director for Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services.

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field and a minimum of five years’ experience as a Network Engineer or equivalent position.
  • Must have extensive experience and expertise with a variety of network hardware, including but not limited to routers, switches, firewalls, network appliances, and integration with third-party products.
  • Extensive experience with Cisco IOS preferred or extensive experience with equivalent CLI-configured enterprise network equipment.
  • Extensive combined experience with Windows and *NIX-based server operating systems and with a configuration of enterprise-level software applications.
  • Self-motivated and willing to learn other technologies and acquire additional skill sets independently.
  • Have the ability and willingness to be a leader on significant numbers of projects simultaneously and to work with the Director for Network, Security, and Telecommunication Services to manage the equipment and personnel resources associated with those projects.
  • Demonstrates practical interpersonal skills and works well with faculty, staff, and students.
