LETU to Host NCFCA Speech and Debate Tournament Jan. 3-4, 2020

[ARCHIVED NEWS RELEASE]

11-20-2019

LeTourneau University will host the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association regional speech and debate tournament on campus from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3-4, 2020, on the university’s main campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview.

About 100 Christian, home-schooled high school students from Texas and Oklahoma will participate, with 14 winners of the tournament awarded prizes.

LeTourneau University will offer each winner of the NCFCA Region XI qualifier a free, three-hour, dual-credit course—a $270 value.  Successful completion of this course, with a grade of C or better, will automatically qualify the student for a $16,000 per year scholarship as a full-time residential student at LeTourneau University, totaling $64,000 in four years.

LeTourneau University's dual enrollment program allows high school students who have at least a 3.0 high school GPA to earn college credit as they complete the requirements for their high school diploma. Dual-credit courses enable high school students to explore college classes to see what they are really like and reduce the overall tuition costs of college. The first NCFCA debate round begins at 8 a.m. Friday.

Volunteer judges for the debate and speech rounds are being sought locally.  For more information, contact Cyndi Wilson at cyndiwilson@ncfca.org or call her at (817) 584-5897 or sign up to volunteer at https://www.ncfca.org/2020-longview-tx (link expired).  Training will be provided.

The NCFCA hosts tournaments at Christian colleges nationwide.  This year is the first year the tournament will be held at LETU.

“Political discourse in our country resembles a dysfunctional marriage,” said LETU political science professor Dr. John Barrett, who is coordinating the speech and debate tournament with the NCFCA. “It’s marked by name calling, grandstanding, character assignation and general unwillingness to genuinely listen or compromise. Civil political discourse is desperately needed in our country today.”

LeTourneau University is the Christian polytechnic university in the nation where educators engage students to nurture Christian virtue, develop competency and ingenuity in their professional fields, integrate faith and work, and serve the local and global community. LETU offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs across a range of disciplines and delivery models at LETU’s residential campus in Longview, Texas, hybrid options at centers in the Dallas and Houston areas and fully online programs.
