A Life of Adventure and Service, Worldwide: Becoming a Missionary Pilot

Reaching people can be a difficult pursuit, but sometimes the most difficult people to reach are those who need it the most. The life of a missionary pilot is equal parts adventure and compassion.

“And under His wings you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.” Psalms 91:4

What does a missionary pilot do?

As a missionary pilot, you will fly small planes with missionaries and supplies to remote areas that are hard to reach. You’ll see the world from a whole new light, gliding into unique landscapes and meeting people with diverse backgrounds. The heart of an adventurer finds its place in the world, not just a head in the clouds. Missionary pilots make a huge impact on the lives of others.

Because mission planes are small and landing is nontraditional—sometimes without developed airstrips—being a well-rounded and independent pilot and/or technician is crucial.

Flying for Purpose: The Life of a Mission Pilot

Watch alumni Brad Hopkins’ journey to Indonesia and read more about how his purpose and passion became his life.

“I've flown very sick children. And I've flown a pastor, his wife and baby and all their possessions into a remote village with just 13 believers to start a church there. I love being a part of this life-changing ministry.” – Brad Hopkins, Missionary Pilot with Mission Aviation Fellowship and LETU alumnus

What kind of degree and pilot license do I need as a missionary pilot?

Becoming a missionary pilot through LETU is a concentration in our pilot program. It may not always be practical to jump to the call and soar into international airspace. With this concentration you can serve your calling as a missionary pilot and eventually settle into a more domestically bounded life.

A Bachelor of Science in Mission Aviation empowers your career with multiple certifications and flight hours.

With a Mission Aviation B.S., you will complete:

  • Airframe and Powerplant Technician Certification (A&P)

  • Private Pilot Certificate

    • Instrument Rating

  • Commercial Pilot Certificate

    • Single engine and multi-engine

    • Instrument Rating

  • Flight Instructor Certificate (Optional)

You can go virtually anywhere the wings will take you, including transitioning to corporate or private airline piloting.
