Title:

Horticultural Entomology; the constant battle that farmers face against real-life tiny aliens.

Abstract:

Insect pests have been a problem for growers since we transitioned from hunter-gatherers to organized agriculture, consequentially leading to buffets for insect pests. We have a history of battling devastating pests such as locusts and aphids, and more recently managing new invasive pests introduced through global trade. In this seminar, we will investigate some of the many challenges that are involved in managing insect pests, using tools from population dynamics, chemical ecology, biological control and integrated pest management.
