SCHEDULE: Office hours are primarily weekdays, but responsibilities require additional hours and flexibility that can include evenings and weekends.
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  They are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of one so classified.
 
The Database Administrator/Analyst serves on a team of other Programmer/Analysts and provides operational database services with security controls to the university including, but not limited to, the design and implementation of related databases, data warehouse/data marts, BI tools, system interfaces, standard applications, and custom applications.
 
  • Designs write and modify programs to improve application processing (e.g. online applications to websites, data transfer to internal databases, processing of application data and online payment systems
  • Provides database support to users, including gathering user requirements to identify improvements which will simplify processes and increase productivity
  • Identifies ways to solve database needs and challenges. This includes researching new database products, services and protocols to enhance systems within the university
  • Communicates with end-users and departments, responds to queries or requests and acts as a liaison with developers to improve applications and establish best practices for the university
  • Analyzes business requirements and programs automated scripts to provide end-user support and regular maintenance to the databases. Creates custom-designed business analysis queries and code to manipulate information and achieve organizational goals
  • Works with development, support, and operations teams to help achieve a state-of-the-art environment that meets current and future business objectives
  • Reviews service-related reports on a daily basis to assure that issues are identified and resolved proactively (database backups, interfaces, maintenance, monitoring)
  • Leads and participates as a contributor in projects
  • Serves in a consultative role for other Database Programmer/Analysts on the Business Systems Management team, acting as mentor and trainer as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Significant experience in a data-focused environment
  • Strong command of and experience with SQL, SQL server platforms, and SQL server tools
  • Advanced knowledge of database security, backup/recovery, and performance monitoring standards
  • Understanding of relational and dimensional data modeling
  • PowerShell and Unix shell scripting skills
  • Familiarity with SSAS, SSIS, SSRS
  • Strong mathematical and statistical knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Excels as a member of a larger team, as a trainer, as a mentor, and as an individual contributor.
  • Knowledge/Experience with the following a definite plus in meeting duties and responsibilities:
    • C#
    • .NET framework
    • PERL
    • Informix database
    • Linux operating system
