LETU December Commencement to Feature Dr. Steven D. Mason

dr-steve-mason.jpgLeTourneau University will host a commencement ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center on the LETU main campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview. More than 150 graduate and undergraduate students from all academic disciplines will be rewarded for their hard work over the past few years as they receive their degrees from LeTourneau University.

Giving the keynote address will be LETU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Steven D. Mason. Mason has been in his current role since Fall 2016, having first joined LETU in the theology department as a professor of Old Testament studies in 2006 after earning his doctorate in St. Andrews, Scotland.

A favorite in and out of the classroom, Mason has taught 13 different Bible classes and consistently teaches in the LETU Honors College. He is the author of a book titled “Eternal Covenant in the Pentateuch: The Contours of an Elusive Phrase,” published in 2008 by T&T Clark.  His impressive record of publishing and presenting research in the field of biblical studies continues with two book projects under contract with Wipf & Stock Publishes and Baker Academic, respectively.

Mason’s leadership among his faculty peers was recognized when he was voted president-elect of the LETU Teaching Faculty Organization before moving into administration roles as associate vice president for academic affairs, associate provost and dean of faculty.

Mason’s commitment to Christian education and scholarship is equaled by his commitment to church life and discipleship, as a licensed minister and ordained elder at One Hope Presbyterian Church in Longview. He and his wife, Bonnie, both graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary and Baylor University. They have three children (Caroline, William and Christopher) and enjoy conducting marriage preparation courses for engaged couples.

While living in Dallas, Mason served on Young Life staff and coached athletics at Providence Christian School of Texas. Born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, he was an All-City quarterback and second baseman at Churchill High School. He is still an avid Spurs fan and is serious about his fantasy football.

LeTourneau University is the Christian polytechnic university in the nation where educators engage students to nurture Christian virtue, develop competency and ingenuity in their professional fields, integrate faith and work, and serve the local and global community.
