03-14-2018

LeTourneau University Dean of Engineering Dr. Steven K. Starrett has been honored as the recipient of the Professional Practice Ethics and Leadership Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. The award honors a licensed professional engineer's accomplishments to preeminently promote superior engineering practice, ethics and leadership.

Starrett was selected for his leadership in advancing the ability of thousands of engineers to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public through the engineering ethics graduate courses and workshops he has presented around the globe.

Starrett also has been selected to receive the 2018 Service to the Institute Award from the Environmental and Water Resources Institute Awards Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The award is given in recognition of extensive and outstanding service to the EWRI, which seeks to advance water resources and environmental solutions to achieve a sustainable future through protecting and securing water and the environment for future generations. To accomplish that goal requires the integration of technical expertise and public policy into the planning, design, construction and operation of environmentally sound and sustainable infrastructure impacting air, land and water resources.
The EWRI is the ASCE's largest technical source for environmental and water-related issues and is one of nine ASCE technical institutes.

Both awards will be presented to Starrett during the World Environmental & Water Resources Congress June 4, 2018 in Minneapolis.

Starrett has, for over 20 years, engaged in providing formal engineering ethics education, helping thousands of students and working professionals advance their abilities to solve ethical dilemmas. His leadership in advancing the ability of thousands of engineers to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public is renowned through the engineering ethics graduate courses and workshops he has presented worldwide.

One of the graduate-level engineering ethics courses he developed, titled "Responsibility of Engineering: Codes & Professionalism," was recognized by the National Academy of Engineering as an exemplary course in engineering ethics education. Starrett has conducted engineering ethics workshops and webinars internationally in Ecuador, Canada, Hawaii and Sri Lanka through ASCE, American Academy of Water Resources Engineers or EWRI.

Starrett recently co-authored a book titled "Engineering Ethics: Real World Case Studies" that was named to the 10 Bestselling ASCE Books of 2017. He has participated in research projects funded by the National Science Foundation focused on graduate engineering and science programs.

Starrett is a licensed professional engineer in the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. He is a Diplomate of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers and a member of the Missouri University of Science and Technology Academy of Civil Engineers. Well-respected within the ASCE for his expertise in water and environmental concerns, Starrett served in 2017 as president of the Environmental and Water Resources Institute, one of the largest technical institutes of the ASCE with 20,000 members. He is a fellow of the ASCE and a fellow of the ASCE Environmental and Water Resources Institute. ASCE is the nation's oldest engineering society and represents more than 150,000 members of the civil engineering professionals in 177 countries.

"The LeTourneau University community is extremely proud of this significant recognition of Dean Starrett's service to EWRI," said LETU Provost Dr. Steven D. Mason. "This award is just the latest of a number of world-class awards he has received from his industry peers, and it highlights not only his devotion to engineering excellence but also his interest in maximizing his passion and expertise for societal good.
