LeTourneau University Alumnus Named Rockwell Collins 2014 Engineer of the Year

LeTourneau University 2006 aeronautical science alumnus Jonathan Demildt, a principal technical project manager in Government Systems at Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was one of three Rockwell Collins employees selected as 2014 Corporate Engineers of the Year. He will be honored during an annual Engineering Breakfast on Monday, Feb. 23, at Rockwell Collins' headquarters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Demildt was selected for achievements that resulted in significant impact to Rockwell Collins and the engineering profession. Demildt is the systems lead and architect on the first Government Systems application of Pro Line FusionTM for Airbus. He was instrumental in adding mission-specific capability to the avionics system that enables several technologies to work together intuitively to increase the safety of the aircraft and reduce flight crew workload. Through his expertise, innovation and customer focus, Demildt enabled Airbus to meet an aggressive aircraft certification schedule.

"The competition for this honor is extremely intense and it would be nearly impossible to overstate Jonathan's achievement," said Josh Baynes, senior public relations specialist at Rockwell Collins.

Demildt said the area of Governmental Systems at Rockwell Collins includes anything that is designed for government agencies or foreign governments, or aircraft that could have dual use for both governmental and civil entities.

"The project I'm working on is a cargo transport that could be used by a company like FedEx or be used by a governmental entity for something like search and rescue," he said.

While Demildt was a student at LETU, interned at Rockwell Collins, and parlayed that experience into his first fulltime employment after he graduated. He said he originally came to LETU from his home in Daytona Beach, Fla., seeking a professional pilot degree, but after taking a few courses, discovered that flying wasn't his favorite aspect of his aviation interest. He was also interested in how things worked.

"LETU has a unique degree that works well at Rockwell Collins," Demildt said. "My aviation and electrical systems concentration gave me enough insight into how aircraft systems work and all the principles in engineering design that helps me understand how the technologies work with flight crews to help make aircraft operate more effectively.

"My degree at LETU was well balanced in both aviation and engineering and helped me better serve customers than if I had gotten any other standard degree from another university," he said. Demildt said that he appreciates the high standard of ethics that is required for working at Rockwell Collins and appreciates how LETU prepared him.
He and his wife, Mallori, met at a church function. They have two sons, Curtis and Connor, ages 1 and 3, respectively.
