LETU Education Graduate Named 2013 Student Teacher of the Year

LeTourneau University teacher education student Cristian Driver of Humble, Texas, was named 2013 Student Teacher of the Year by the Texas Directors of Field Experiences in San Antonio Monday, Oct. 21. Driver graduated from LETU in May with a degree in mathematics education and is certified to teach grades 8-12 math. He is now teaching algebra at Manvel High School in the Alvin Independent School District near Houston, where he also coaches track and basketball. At LETU, he played basketball for the YellowJackets.

He is the fourth student teacher of the year who has graduated from LETU's teacher preparation program since 1997 to win this distinction. Others included Matthew Bradley in 2010, Breanna Sellers Hurd in 2002 and Karen Bennett in 1997. One additional student, Nikita Mumphrey, was named intern of the year in 2010 by Texas Alternative Certification Association.
"Cristian represents the best of what our Teacher Education program brings to our local schools," said Dr. Wayne Jacobs, dean of the LETU School of Education. "His character, commitment and desire to see his students as unique creations of God are exemplified in his work in his school district. We have been blessed to have worked with Cristian at LeTourneau University and know he will make a significant impact on the lives of hundreds of students over the next several years."

Cristian's university supervisor Dr. Julie Teel-Borders said he was "a terrific example of one who lives out the call of servant leadership." She said that during his student teaching experience, several of his 9th grade high school algebra students expressed how much they had learned from him because he was able to explain it to them in a way they could understand.

Attending the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education (CSOTTE) awards event with Driver, Jacobs and Teel-Borders were Dr. Kathy Stephens, director of Teacher Education; Jodie Hilburn, instructor; Becky Birdsong, certification officer; and Dr. Darla Baggett, director of graduate school programs in Teacher Education.

Stephens, who directs the teacher education program, said, "Cristian is an excellent representative of our LeTourneau Teacher Education Program - one that includes a high-quality cutting-edge curriculum designed to train and prepare Christ-like educators who are compassionate and demonstrate the highest integrity and ethics to go and teach wherever they are needed."
