LETU Business Students Invest In Community Through VITA

LeTourneau University students are investing in their community by providing tax assistance to families who need it through a program called VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).Community members who earn less than $55,000 can go to 600 West Garfield St. in Longview for free tax preparation assistance using the e-file. LeTourneau students have been an active part of the volunteer force for several years. This year alone, the nine student volunteers have logged over 150 hours of volunteer service, filing over 330 returns with a few weeks still remaining before the deadline.Student volunteers go through a training course provided by United Way. After passing a final test, volunteers are certified by the IRS to help community members file their taxes. The hours of volunteer work offered by LETU students is a vital part of the initiative and a valuable way for students to effectively invest in their community.VITA hours are from 6 - 8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays, until April 17. For more information about VITA call 903-236-9211 or visit http://www.longviewunitedway.org/.
