LETU Provost Dr. Philip A. Coyle to Keynote Houston Graduation


LeTourneau University Provost Dr. Philip A. Coyle will be the keynote speaker at LETU's Houston commencement ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at Sagemont Church, 11300 South Sam Houston Parkway East.

More than 60 graduates will receive their undergraduate and graduate degrees from LETU's School of Graduate and Professional Studies.
Coyle was named LETU's provost and executive vice president in July 2011. Prior to this role, from 2002 to 2011, Dr. Coyle served as the academic dean and chief academic officer of Richmont Graduate University in Chattanooga, Tenn., and Atlanta, Ga. He served as the department chairman and professor of psychology and counseling at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary from 1989 to 2002, overseeing master's and doctoral degree programs in psychology, marriage and family therapy, divinity, and pastoral care and counseling. He has also taught at the William Carey University School of Nursing in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Latin-American University of Ambato, Ecuador.

Coyle earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and business from Memphis State University. He received master's degrees in religious education, and marriage & family therapy, a doctor of education degree in counseling, and a doctor of philosophy degree in psychology from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He is an ordained minister and has served on two church staffs as minister of family life and counseling.

Coyle is a licensed as both a professional counselor and a marriage and family therapist. He has provided over 40,000 hours of direct counseling services to couples, families, groups, and individuals. He has also directed several human services programs such as outpatient clinics, a foster care program, private counseling practices, and hospital pastoral care departments. He was commissioned as a United States Air Force Officer in 1981. He has been married for more than 30 years to Judi, who is also a marriage and family therapist. They have two grown sons, Chris, a service technician for Longview Cable, and Andrew, a law student at Samford University's Cumberland School of Law.
