Joel Allison to Keynote at LETU December Commencement in Longview


LeTourneau University's commencement speaker for the winter commencement ceremonies on the main campus in Longview will be Joel Allison, president and chief executive officer of Baylor Health Care System in Dallas. Commencement ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center at the Longview campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. About 200 graduates from the traditional and working adult programs are expected to participate.

In his role at Baylor, Allison develops the hospital's reputation as a patient-focused hospital that offers safe, quality patient care that can be measured and reported.

Allison has worked more than three decades in health care management, joining Baylor in 1993 and serving as senior executive vice president and chief operating officer before being promoted in 2000 to CEO. He earned his bachelor's degree in 1970 in journalism and religion at Baylor University where he was named a distinguished alumnus in 2004. He earned his master's degree in 1973 in health care administration at Trinity University where the Healthcare Alumni Association honored him with the "Leonard A. Duce Award" for outstanding leadership and significant contribution to the healthcare field in 1999. In October 2010, he was inducted into the Baylor "B" Association's "Wall of Honor."

Allison also graduated from the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School and in 2004 he received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Dallas Baptist University. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and serves in national and international roles in healthcare leadership. From 2004 to 2010, he has annually been on the list as one of the top 100 "most powerful people in healthcare" by Modern Healthcare magazine. Accolades in 2008 include the Boone Powell Sr. Award for Excellence and the Earl M. Collier Award for distinguished hospital administration.
