LETU Field Supervisor Receives Teacher of the Year Award


Dr. Elaine HendrixLeTourneau University Senior Field Supervisor Dr. Elaine Hendrix received the Christa McAuliffe Teacher of the Year in Search of Excellence Award for Post-Secondary education from the Houston West Chamber of Commerce. The award was presented at the 20 th annual Teacher of the Year and Educational Partnership Awards Luncheon at the Omni Westside Hotel in Houston, Texas, on Friday, May 14.
As a senior field supervisor, Hendrix oversees, teaches and mentors LETU students during their student-teaching internships at schools around the Houston area.
The award is named after Christa McAuliffe, the teacher/astronaut who lost her life in the Challenger space shuttle accident on January 28, 1986. Teachers who receive this award are recognized as being excellent educators by showing courage. The recipients of this award are selected based on personal interviews as well as on a 300-word essay written by the nominees about their accomplishments and philosophy of education. Hendrix was chosen to receive this award over other nominees from University of Houston–Victoria, University of Houston–Sugar Land, Houston Community College and American Intercontinental University.
Hendrix has been in Education for more than 30 years. She has spent 20 years in higher education in Teacher’s Education and 12 years teaching Reading/Language Arts to grades K-8. She earned her bachelor’s, masters and doctoral degrees all in education from the University of Houston.
Before coming to LETU in 2004, Hendrix taught at other universities, such as, Penn State University, California State University and the University of Houston. Since she has been at LETU, she has served as the Houston PACT coordinator, a master adjunct faculty member and senior field supervisor. She and her husband, John, live in Houston. They have four children and three grandchildren.
