LETU Trustee Emeritus Billy Spain Dies


LeTourneau University Trustee Emeritus Billy W. Spain Sr., 76, of Birmingham, Alabama, died February 22, 2010. Spain was an executive in the financial consulting industry.

"Billy Spain has long been a good friend of LeTourneau University," said LeTourneau University President Dale A. Lunsford. "He will be remembered for his Christian integrity in his workplace and Christ-like leadership as a husband, father and grandfather."

Billy Spain was elected as a Trustee in spring 1996. He was elected Trustee Emeritus in spring 2007, effective at the end of the Fall Board meeting 2007. Trustee Emeritus positions are only selected from those "with records of distinctive service," as outlined in the bylaws.

Because of his wisdom, good judgment, loyalty, and support, the board honored his leadership and expressed their desire for his continued relationship with LeTourneau University by electing him Trustee Emeritus.

Spain graduated from the University of Alabama with a Bachelor of Science degree in the School of Commerce and Business Administration in 1956. While there, he was Grand Master of Kappa Sigma fraternity. For the last 54 years, he has been in the insurance and financial services industry as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant. In addition to his service on the Board of Trustees at LeTourneau University, he served in numerous leadership roles, including as an Elder at Briarwood Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Amos Edward and Nell George Spain, his brothers, Travis and Alvin Spain. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Foster Spain; children Susan Merrill (Tommy), Billy Spain (Linda), and Alan Spain (Jennifer); seven grandchildren, Trey Merrill (Madison), Ashley Merrill, Tripp, Graham, Davis, David and Cole Spain; and sister-in-law, Maude Spain.
