1. Discuss an event that happened to you that turned out differently than you expected it to.

2. The passage says the two men didn’t recognize Jesus. Why (and how) do you think they were kept from recognizing who He was?

3. How did the two men describe Jesus and what had happened?

4. If you were there with the men, how would the events of the last few days have crushed your expectations?

5. How are your expectations of the Christian life sometimes changed by life’s trials?

6. Jesus confronted them and said they were “foolish of heart” and “slow to believe.” What are some reasons that we are so often “slow of heart to believe”?

7. What are some events in your life right now that God might be using to teach you a lesson? You see them as irritations or disappointments. Maybe God intends them to be a learning experience.

8. What lesson(s) does God want to teach you through these events?

9. Just like the two men traveling to Emmaus, we might be disappointed or discouraged with what’s happening in our lives. Pray together as a family that you will recognize God at work, just like they suddenly recognized Jesus. Pray that you will be quick to trust Him. Pray that He will be glorified despite what seems to be a set back.
