Family Time Get-Together

Around God's Word

Using These Devotionals

Dr. Steve Armstrong

These devotionals are designed with activities for a range of ages from preschoolers all the way through teens and adults.   They begin with an activity which has the purpose of catching the attention of the family and getting them thinking about the topic.  Usually it is  for younger members of the family, but often involves the whole family.

This is followed by a short Bible reading.  It is great if you use your own Bibles, but a link is provided to BibleGateway.com which will display the passage specified.  Note the suggestion after the given reference which tells the family what they should be listening for as the passage is read.  This focuses their attention on the verses.

Then specific discussion questions are posed.  These can be read from the web page or printed out for family members.  They start with some specific factual information which can be found in the passage and progress to queries about what the passage means and how it should be applied.  It ends with a suggestion for prayer together.  This part of the devotional could be completed in as little as 15 minutes.  Adult members of the family may wish to spend more time alone thinking about the implications of the passage.  You may also wish to do this by yourself before using it with the family.

Remaining activities are for enrichment and allow for the creativity of the individual family members to be demonstrated as they think about the devotional topic and its application.  These activities will occasionally involve use of technology available to many households today.  If you don't have a speciific computer program or piece of hardware, just take the idea and do what you can with what you have.
