Dev C++ Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Windows

  1. Download and install Dev C++. It is an integrated development environment (IDE) software that helps to you to write programs in C++ and then run them
  2. On your storage media of choice, create a folder called Demonstration
  3. Copy WordJumbleGame.cpp to your Demonstration folder
  4. Start up the Dev-C++ software and click on each of the pull-down menus to see what they contain. Then locate the Compile button and the Run button on the far left side of the Dev-C++ window near the upper left hand corner. You will need to use these buttons later
  5. In the File menu, click on Open File. When the File window appears, navigate to the Demonstration folder and load the WordJumbleGame.cpp file
  6. Click on the Compile button to get Dev-C++ to check the syntax of the WordJumbleGame.cpp file and translate its contents into an executable file called WordJumbleGame.exe
  7. Click on the Run button to get Dev-C++ to run the Word Jumble program inside a Command Prompt window. Have fun playing the game.
  8. After finishing the game, use the editor window in Dev-C++ to look through the WordJumbleGame.cpp file to get a basic idea of how it works. This program is written in the C++ programming language and contains almost all of the programming techniques that will be taught in a first semester computer science course. The program will probably be difficult for you to understand at first, but by the end of the course you should be able to understand it and most likely create one very similar to it
  9. To exit Dev-C++, click on Exit in the File menu or click on the X in the upper right corner of the Dev-C++ window
