Purpose

The LeTourneau University Summer Program in Puebla provides an excellent opportunity for students, teachers and other interested individuals to study the Spanish language, to gain the invaluable experience of living in another country and to earn college credit (6 credit hours minimum) toward a degree. Students in the program spend two weeks in Puebla -- in the Hotel Colonial. During their stay they attend daily conversation, reading, pronunciation and grammar classes taught by LeTourneau University faculty and local Mexican conversation directors. There are also ample opportunities for students to visit nearby points of interest, including Cholula, Mexico City, and the Pyramids of Teotihuacan.

The Academic Program

This academic trip grants six credit hours from the following courses to students that successfully complete them.

  • SPAN 2113 - Intermediate Spanish I
  • SPAN 2123 - Intermediate Spanish II
  • SPAN 4981 - Spanish Phonetics
  • SPAN 4982 - Spanish Advanced Grammar and Composition
  • SPAN 4983 - Spanish Advanced Conversation

Each day, students will attend classes that will provide instruction on grammar, readings at an intermediate and advanced level, and intensive oral-aural practice. Classes are taught from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

During the afternoons, the students will have special assignments and the opportunity to interact with Mexican conversation directors (aka “acompañantes”.) These daily activities that usually last 2 hours will help to involve students linguistically, socially, and culturally in the Mexican history and folklore. The opportunity to study the Spanish language in its natural setting is a unique and unforgettable experience.

During the evenings, the students have tutoring and pronunciation drill sessions. Open forums are also part of some evening activities.

Academic Prerequisites

Two semesters of college Spanish or their equivalent are prerequisite to the courses at the 2000 level. Four semesters of college Spanish or their equivalent are prerequisite to the courses at the 4000 level. In order to receive credit, students must be admitted to LeTourneau University. Participants must register for 6 credit hours. Dual-enrollment high-school students are not elegible to participate in this program unless special permission is granted.
