As part of my graduate work at Texas Woman's University, I had the opportunity to serve an internship as the Technology Assistant to a professor teaching his first distance education course. An early attempt to take advantage of both synchronous and asynchronous electronic environments, the course was fascinating both for its successes and its challenges. My observation notes and archived course materials provided the data for this paper, presented as part of the Teaching in the Community Colleges 1999 Online Conference.
"Situating Invention: Taking Bakhtin into the MOO"
This paper was presented at the Computers and Writing 2002 conference at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois (May 16-19, 2002). My purpose in this paper is to demonstrate the usefulness of the MOO as a site for rhetorical invention and to show how Bakhtinian theory can be applied to designing rhetorical invention activities in the MOO.

Hrotswitha, the Strong Voice of Gandersheim Although she is not widely-known, Hrotswitha, a 10th-century nun, was a strong literary voice in the Middle Ages. Her oeuvre includes sacred legends, prefaces, dedications, historical poems, and plays. Hrotswitha understood the power of drama. Concerned that Christians were being corrupted by secular dramas, especially those of Terrence, Hrotswitha used drama as a vehicle to focus attention on the purity of godly love rather than on mere earthly affection. This Website gives an overview of Hrotswitha's life and influences, along with a survey of her literary contributions with special attention to her plays. |

LU-MOO is a Web-based graphical MOO (Multi-user dimension Object Oriented). MOO is an educational adaptation of programming originally written for synchronous online games. LU-MOO is a tool used for rhetorical invention in my composition classrooms, a pedagogical strategy which is the subject of my dissertation. Programming capability in LU-MOO is available to all LeTourneau University students, staff, and faculty. Guests are welcome to login as guests (no password required) and to browse around and participate in online discussions. |
