Hrotswitha, The Strong Voice of Gandersheim
Table of Contents
Although she is not widely-known, Hrotswitha, a 10th-century nun, was a
strong literary voice in the Middle Ages. Her oeuvre includes sacred legends, prefaces,
dedications, historical poems, and plays. Hrotswitha understood the
power of drama. Concerned that Christians were being corrupted by secular
dramas, especially those of Terrence, Hrotswitha used drama as a vehicle
to focus attention on the purity of godly love rather than on mere earthly
affection.
