LeTourneau University will host the annual Texas Association for the Improvement of Reading (TAIR) conference for East Texas educators from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, in the Education Building on the LETU campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Avenue.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. The event will focus on the importance of strong reading and writing skills for success in today’s fast-paced world. This year’s keynote speaker is Tracy Rieger who will present “Writing in Science,” regarding the works of Betsy Fulwiler, author of Writing in Science and Writing in Science Action! Rieger is the lead science curriculum specialist at Round Rock Independent School District near Austin, Texas.
Rieger will encourage teachers to transform their students’ critical thinking and writing skills through a practical approach of combining expository writing and science.
Registration cost is $45 per person before Jan. 22. Late registration is $55 and available the morning of the event. School districts sending 10 or more teachers from the same district earn a discounted fee of $40 each. Registration includes lunch, morning refreshments and drawing for door prizes.
TAIR provides literacy educators with the opportunity to interact with outstanding professionals as they become acquainted with current research, methods and materials and share successful instructional strategies.
In addition, the annual half-price Scholastic Book Fair will be available during the day-long conference.
