LeTourneau University’s Jairus “J.J.” Rockmore earned back-to-back American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week honors recently, and became the school’s second player to be named the American Southwest Conference East Division Player of the Week. Rockmore joins Dale Vanwright, who earned the honors on Dec. 7, 2009.
Rockmore, who garnered the award last week after averaging 19 points, 5.5 assists, four rebounds and three steals in a pair of conference wins, had another outstanding week as the YellowJackets went 1-1. The senior guard averaged 23 points, 6.5 rebounds, four assists and 2.5 steals in a pair of games. In 36 minutes of action against the University of the Ozarks, he was 7-of-8 from the field, including three 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 23 points as the YellowJackets held off the Eagles, 90-86.
Rockmore said he has grown as an athlete at LETU, but has grown spiritually, as well.
“Before attending LeTourneau, I believed my faith was strong and that my love for the Lord was great. But with countless hours of studying the different biblical texts required in the course curriculum, I found myself growing more and more each day.
“This school has a great Christian background and it made my decision to attend a no-brainer,” he said. “I love that there are other devoted Christians around me each and every day, and they understand what I am going through and who allow me to be who I am.”
Rockmore is the son of Homer and Jean Rockmore of Longview and is majoring in kinesiology and sports management. About what he hopes to do after college, Rockmore plans to pursue his passion for sports.
“After graduation I plan to try my luck in the sports world, working my way into an organization and progressing up the ladder,” Rockmore said. “I am a Sports Management major and the possibilities seem to be endless with what I am able to do in that field.”
