LETU Student Zachary Phillips Wins $1,500 IEEE Scholarship for Video

LETU electrical engineering major Zachary Phillips won a $1,500 second place scholarship in the third annual IEEE-USA “How Engineers Make a World of Difference” Video Competition.  His video can be viewed online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFbqc5B5oLs.  In his video, Phillips describes how his love for music and audio production has led him to pursue a career in electrical engineering to be on the cutting edge of developing the next generation of audio equipment, perhaps even following in the footsteps of Dr. Amar Bose.

Other winners included Sergio Flores Castro, Miguel Murillo and Norelia Flores from the University of Nevada Las Vegas who won first place and will share a $2,000 scholarship, and third place winner Carrie Hunter of Pensacola Junior College in Florida who won a $1,000 scholarship.  All of the students are student members of IEEE, the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing innovation and technological excellence for the benefit of humanity.

“Zachary’s video does a great job of showing how engineers make a difference in a variety of areas that touch our daily lives,” said LETU engineering dean Dr. Tom Hellmuth.  “Engineering is a field that allows students to pursue their passions in a way that they really can make a difference in the world around them.”

Pender McCarter, senior public relations counselor for the IEEE reported that the chief judge in the competition found this year’s entries to be among the best since the competition began three years ago.  IEEE and its members inspire a global community to innovate for a better tomorrow through its highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities such as this video competition.
