LeTourneau University Dominate Spartans
Wed, Feb 18 2009
The LeTourneau University Baseball Team took to the field today for
another non-conference battle as they hosted the Spartans of Castleton State and pounded out 13
hits as they defeated CSU 16-2. The win improves LETU’s record to 2-0 on the young
season.
The YellowJackets came out strong in the first inning when Joe Kilgore
(Greenville, TX/McMurry) led off the game with a walk and senior Nick Webking (Plano, TX/U of
Dallas) followed up with an opposite field single to advance Kilgore to second. Ed Hurta
(Freeport, TX/Brazosport) stepped in with two on and delivered a bomb over the leftfield
wall. The Jackets would push across an unearned run to finish the first inning scoring and
took a 4-0 lead into the second.
Neither team scored in the second. After the Spartans got one back in
the top of the third LETU struck for a five spot in the bottom half of the inning. Josh Brown
(Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) led off with a double off of the leftfield wall. Then after a
walk, sacrifice and another walk loaded the bases, catcher Joey Ramos (Waller, TX/Prairie View
A&M) delivered a solid single that plated a pair of runs. Daniel Francis (Henderson,
TX/Henderson) belted a two RBI triple and then later scored on a passed ball to push five runs
across and extend their lead to 9-1.
LeTourneau put up four more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and
two in the eight to round out their 16 total runs. The Jacket pitchers combined to give up
only two runs while scattering six hits. Starter Travis Norris (Spring, TX/Klein Oak) picked
up the win with three solid innings of work. Eric Rogers (Smithville, TX/Smithville)
impressively struck out four in only two innings of work as the bullpen did not give up a run after
the fourth inning.
Brown led the Jacket attack with three hits while Webking and Ramos
each recorded two hits. Hurta drove in three while Ramos, Francis, and Charles Johnson
(Dallas, TX/Ranger) each notched a pair of RBIs.
LETU will be back in action this weekend as they open up ASC play
hosting Schreiner University. The Jackets will play a single game on Friday at 2 p.m. and
then play a double-header beginning at noon on Saturday.
