LeTourneau University’s enrollment of traditional age students
from 18-22 studying in Longview has reached an all-time record in the school’s 63-year history,
totaling 1,396 students for the fall 2008. Last year’s traditional fall enrollment set a
record at 1,327. LETU reports enrollments federally on the 12th day of class.
The record traditional enrollment includes record retention of 891
students, up from last year’s 861, as well as strong new student numbers of 430, up from last year’s
417. The university also boasts its largest class ever of dual-enrollment high school
students, totaling 32 with 15 of those from Christian Heritage School in Rockwall, Texas, who are
taking classes via video conferencing.
LETU welcomed 56 international students this fall, with 19 new
international students from its sister school Handong Global University in Pohang, South
Korea. The fall 2008 traditional student enrollment includes a record number of female
students, with 391 women to 1,005 men. The university’s total fall 2008 enrollment, including
students in all working adult programs online and across the state, is 3,663.
The two majors attracting the largest number of traditional
students were engineering (163) and aeronautical science (95), with aero science majors topping
last year’s previous record of 91 students.
"The national reputation of LeTourneau University continues to
grow,” said President Dr. Dale A. Lunsford.
“Our student body in Longview this fall is the largest ever and comes from all
50 states and many nations. We are bringing the world to Longview as we prepare to also send
our students out into the world."
Besides its traditional student population, LETU’s Longview campus
this year also serves a record number of online students totaling 592, up from last year’s record
of 483. Besides Longview, the university offers working adult programs in Dallas, Bedford, Houston,
Austin and Tyler.
“The strength of our traditional enrollment on the Longview campus
during these turbulent economic times is evidence of LeTourneau University's increasingly
strong reputation, not only in Texas, but all across the country” said Linda Fitzhugh,
vice president for Enrollment Services. “The campus is further enhanced by our Handong
Global University students who will be studying as part of our international
exchange program.”
