YellowJacket Soccer Senior, Daniel Iya, earns ASC Sportsmanship Award
Mon, Dec 8 2008
LeTourneau University senior forward Daniel
Iya has been recognized for his accomplishments beyond the ball on the soccer field this year. The
American Southwest Conference has named Iya the inaugural ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year as
a part of the 2008 ASC men’s soccer awards.
The ASC holds all athletes to the highest
ideals of sportsmanship, as exemplified by the NCAA Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
statement on behalf of all Division III student-athletes, which calls for continual demonstration
of respect, fair play and responsibility. The ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year award honors
student-athletes whose actions demonstrate one or more of these ideals, as well as civility,
honesty and unselfishness, as they compete in intercollegiate athletics.
As a testament to Iya’s character, he was
chosen to receive the award by a vote of the league’s 14 head coaches, who selected him as a
representation of such ideals. Iya, a student from Jos, Nigeria, attended Hillcrest School.
Three additional LETU players were named among
the ASC top performers on the field this year, with midfielder Dillon Holt, who scored eight goals
this season, earning ASC Co-Offensive Freshman of the Year as well as 2nd team all-conference
honors.
Senior defender Ryan Rector and freshman
goalkeeper Kyle Davis also grabbed 2nd team all-conference accolades.
LETU finished the season 9-9-2 overall and 7-4-2 in conference
