LeTourneau University alumnus and Board of Trustees member L. V. "Bud" McGuire was the commencement speaker for LeTourneau University's Houston commencement on Saturday, May 10. McGuire is a principal who directs operations nationally and internationally for Alpha Petroleum Services in locations such as New Zealand and Tunisia. His most important focus in business has been to maintain a Christian witness and treat his professional career as a ministry.
McGuire graduated with honors in 1966 from LeTourneau College and earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering and has studied management at Southern Methodist University's Cox School of Business and Harvard University's Graduate School of Business Administration. He was elected to LeTourneau University's Board of Trustees in 2002 and currently chairs the University Advancement Committee. He also served for six years on LeTourneau's Engineering Advisory Council.
During his career in the petroleum industry, McGuire worked as drilling manager for Conoco in Scotland; as vice president of production for Hamilton Brothers Oil and Gas Ltd. in London; as senior vice president for Kerr-McGee Corporation in Oklahoma; as vice president for operations for Enron Oil & Gas International; and as senior vice president and board member for Mariner-Energy, Inc. in Houston. His expertise in leading teams and in drilling operations, both offshore and onshore, has taken him around the world to Europe, India, China, the Middle East, and South America managing projects representing hundreds of millions of dollars to the oil and gas industry. Nearly 140 graduates from LeTourneau University's Houston and Austin educational centers walked the stage to receive their bachelor's and master's degrees in business and interdisciplinary studies. The ceremony was held at Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston.
