LeTourneau University is taking registration applications for its second annual East Texas Pre-Advanced Placement Summer Institute for local teachers interested in improving their classroom skills. This one-week, summer workshop will be held from July 28 to Aug. 1 at the LETU campus, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave. in Longview. Any middle school or high school teacher is invited to attend, regardless of whether they are currently teaching or are exploring the possibility of teaching advanced placement courses. The workshop focuses on developing teachers in the four major content areas of math, English, science or social studies.
Workshop cost is $450 per teacher, however the Texas Education Agency will fully reimburse any teacher who is a first-time enrollee or any teacher who qualifies for a follow-up course. Teachers also can be reimbursed if they have not taken an APSI in three or more years.. For teachers coming to the workshop from out of town, the university has negotiated a special rate at a local hotel.
Workshop consultants are all teachers in advanced placement courses and are certified through the College Board as AP professionals.“This APSI workshop is a wonderful opportunity for LeTourneau University to reach out to local middle school and high school teachers,” said David Shankle, director of special programs at LeTourneau University. “Pre-Advanced Placement courses are designed to better prepare students in the sixth through eleventh grades for college level work.”
He said each class session would have a maximum of 30 teachers enrolled and that the one-week institute offers teachers 3.0 Continuing Education Credits (CEUs).Those interested in more information can contact Shankle at (903) 233-4093 or visit the Web site at http://www.letu.edu/apsi.
