Records Fall for Men’s
Golf
WINFIELD, KS – It was a weekend of record-breaking for
the LeTourneau University men’s golf team as they finished in fourth place at
the Southwestern Fall Classic shooting a school record 36-hole score of
598.
The two day tournament featured 16 teams, with LeTourneau
being the only non-scholarship program competing. The men shot 299 on both Friday and
Saturday. This set the school
record for 18 holes. The fourth
place finish was also the best finish ever for a YellowJacket squad in a
full-field event.
“I knew that this team had great potential and I was
expecting a good result. However,
they exceeded even my expectations with these results,” said head man Dr. Andy
Woodring.
The YellowJacket squad was led by a group of locals. Nate McCrary (Longview/Spring Hill HS),
Josh Rutland (Gladewater/Sabine HS),
Christian Sarran (Longview/Spring Hill
HS) and Hunter Cloud
(Gladewater/Gladewater HS) all hail from local high schools and placed first
through fourth, respectively on the team.
McCrary
and Rutland
tied for sixth place overall, with a two-day total of 147 (+3). The 36-hole scores by these two set the
school record for best score in relation to par. McCrary also set the school record with
an even par 72 on the second day of the event. Sarran posted a 151 to tie for
18th place and Cloud rounded out the totals with a 153, good enough
for a tie for 28th place.
“This sets a new standard of competitiveness for
LeTourneau men’s golf in the American Southwest Conference and NCAA Division
III,” said Woodring.
The
YellowJackets hit the links again on Sunday, September 21 at the Texas Lutheran
Invitational in Seguin.
