LETU GOLF TAKES 3RD AT ASC
CHAMPIONSHIPS
ABILENE, TEXAS –
After finishing in 10th place at last year’s American Southwest
Conference tournament, the LeTourneau University men’s golf team cruised to a
third place finish at the 6,977-yard par-71 Diamondback course on Monday and
Tuesday
Freshman Doug Moorehead
(Hamilton, OH/Hamilton HS) led the charge with an overall finish of second
place in the conference, earning first team all-ASC honors along the way. Moorehead shot three straight 74’s to
finish one stroke behind the leader, Sean Sciba from
UT-Tyler.
The 54-hole event saw the ‘Jackets improve their standing after each of
the three rounds. The team shot 313
for the first 18 holes and were in a tie for fifth, before shooting a 304 in the
second round on Monday to move up to fourth place. In the final round on Tuesday, the team
shot another 304 and moved into third place when the University of Mary
Hardin-Baylor carded a 321 to drop out of the top three
teams.
The other four team members of the YellowJackets finished bunched up
between 20th and 29th place. Junior Josh Rutland (Gladewater/Sabine HS)
shot 81-75-78 to finish in a tie for 20th place, freshman Christian Sarran (Longview/Spring Hill
HS) shot 79-81-75 to take 23rd place, freshman Adam Harding
(Boca Raton, FL/Spanish
River HS) carded rounds of 80-74-83 and
freshman Nate McCrary (Longview/Spring
Hill HS) finished with rounds of 80-81-77.
McMurry University came away with the team championship
beating Texas Lutheran by one stroke 911 to 912. The YellowJackets finished with a 921
and were followed by Hardin-Simmons (923), Mary Hardin-Baylor (923), UT-Dallas
(948), Louisiana College (963), UT-Tyler (976), Schreiner
(992), Concordia (1017) and Ozarks (1229).
Women’s
Golf
The LadyJackets posted their best tournament score of the year at the ASC
Championships at the 6,009-yard par-71 Diamondback course in
Abilene. Senior Lisa Kok
(Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian HS) led the team with a 12th
place finish shooting rounds of 80 and 90.
She missed the top-10 by just three strokes. Overall, the team shot rounds of 377 and
383 to finish with 760 for the tournament, 10 strokes better than any
performance this season.
Freshman Veronica Crutcher
(Kilgore/Sabine HS) finished with a strong 85 on the second day of the
tournament and finished in 16th place overall. Rounding out the team was Sarah Hess (Muenster/Sacred Heart HS)
in 25th place while Katrina
Visina (Rowlett/Rowlett HS) and Stevi Peace
(Jakarta, Indonesia/Jakarta International) tied for 26th
place.
The individual champion for the women’s tournament was Brittany Cary of
McMurry who shot 76-80=156. The
University of Mary Hardin
Baylor won the team title with a score of
641. They were followed by
Hardin-Simmons (676), McMurry (687), Texas Lutheran (709), LeTourneau (760) and
UT-Dallas (911).
