Move-In Assistance for Technology
Move-In Technology Assistance
Welcome to LeTourneau University! Technology will be a vital part of your experience at LeTourneau. We're excited you are joining us this year and want to take this opportunity to provide you with an easy-to-use reference on how to begin taking advantage of technology at LeTourneau. LeTourneau maintains a campus-wide network known as "LetNet" which is the base for most technology systems on campus. The term "LetNet" is used to refer to this entire network which connects computers, and other systems including phones and video on campus.
This introduction to technology at LeTourneau is broken into several sections which are linked below. Please feel free to contact us locations listed below in the "How to Contact Information Technology for Assistance" section if you have any questions or if we can assist in any way.

What to Bring
- What you will need at LeTourneau somewhat depends on your technology needs, but in general, the
following is a good list of things a typical student will want to have. Some students may need
additional or different items. Feel free to call us at the contact points above if you have any
questions we can assist with.
-
Computer/Networking
-
Personal Computer or Laptop: While general-purpose computer centers are
available on campus, most students will find it most beneficial to use their own personal computer
in their room

Personal Printer: Printers are available for use by those using university
computing centers. however, for the convenience of printing from within your own room, most
students will wish to bring a personal printer. Excellent solutions are available from the
Dell/LeTourneau Offer Website above, or from major retailers. While you are free to purchase any
brand you choose, you will find a list of manufacturers we have good experience with on the
Technology Specifications document linked above. -
Ethernet Cable (7' - 15'): This is used to connect a wired
Ethernet connection in a residence hall room to a personal computer or laptop. Each room has one
wired Ethernet connection for each student. Ethernet cables are available for purchase from major
retailers. Most users will find that a 7'-10' cable is adequate. It is unusual to need an Ethernet
cable longer than 15'. It is recommended that even students planning to connect laptops to our
network wirelessly have a wired cable available for initial connection or troubleshooting
purposes. -
Antivirus Software (Provided free by LETU): LeTourneau requires that each
personal computer on LeTourneau networks maintain a current antivirus software package with updated
definitions. LeTourneau provides all students with a copy of Microsoft Forefront that they can use
for this purpose, or you are welcome to use your preferred antivirus package as long as it has
current definitions.
to visit the LetNet S@FE Antivirus site to learn more about antivirus requirements at LETU or
to download your copy of Microsoft Forefront.

Cable Television
- Cable-ready television
- Coaxial cable to connect to cable TV jack in each room.
- A coaxial splitter if you and your roommate each plan to bring a separate TV. (There is only one Cable TV jack in each residence hall room).
- DVD or other media player as needed.
-
Telephones
- A standard touch-tone telephone
- Wireless Phones, if desired, should be 5.8Ghz phones as 2.4Ghz phones may cause interference with the residence hall wireless networks.
- Telephone splitter, if you and your roommate each intend to provide a phone as there is one
functioning physical phone port in each residence hall room. (There is a dedicated voicemail box
and phone number for each student, but both numbers in a room ring the same physical jack). See the
"Telephone Services" section below for more information on setting up phone connections at
LeTourneau.

What not to Bring
-
Please do not bring the following items:
- Ethernet routers, switches, and wireless access points. These items are not allowed to be plugged into LeTourneau's network.
- Older 2.4Ghz Cordless Phones: These phones can cause interference with portions of the wireless networks in residence halls. As a result, we ask as a courtesy to your fellow residents that you avoid using them in favor of 5.8Ghz or DECT 6.0 models wherever possible.
How to Connect your Computer to LetNet and the Internet
- When you have set up your computer in your residence hall room, you will need to connect it to
either the wired network or the wireless network. The first step will be physically connecting your
Ethernet cable to the wall or correctly configuring your wireless card:
-
Wired network: The wired network offers each campus resident a dedicated 100Mbps
connection to LetNet. To connect to the wired network, connect your Ethernet cable to your
computer's network port (which should look similar to the graphic to the left) and connect the
other end to one of the two data ports in your room.
-
How to identify a LetNet data port: LetNet data parts in residence halls are
blue (either the entire jack is blue or the jack has a blue rectangular identifier above it). In
rooms where there are only two data ports, you may connect to either port. In these rooms, the data
ports should be labeled with the room number followed by "A" and "B". Your roommate may use the
remaining port. In some residence areas (such as the quads) there are four total ports in
each room, labeled A, B, C, and D. In these rooms, ports A and C are the data ports, Port B is the
single phone connection for the room, and Port D is a spare port and not connected to any
services.

Wireless Network: LeTourneau's wireless network is a secured network. This means
it will take some extra settings on your computer to connect with it compared with less secure
networks like those in some hotels and internet hotspots. Full instructions on how to correctly
configure your computer for required wireless security settings used at LeTourneau are available by
visiting our
Wireless
website. We encourage each wireless user to visit that site for more detailed instructions.
- For convenience, the most common settings which should get many wireless users on our network
are as follows:
-
SSID: letnet (must be all lowercase)
Network Authentication: WPA or WPA2 (Enterprise)
Data Encryption: TKIP or AES
Authentication Type: PEAP
802.1X: Enabled
-
SSID: letnet (must be all lowercase)
- Note: letnet is the only wireless SSID maintained at this time for general access. letne t is a broadcasting SSID and should be readily visible to all current operating systems when in areas of wireless coverage (Click here for wireless locations on campus). Students should not trust or connect to other wireless SSIDs they may see broadcasting as LeTourneau cannot vouch for the security or origin of those networks.
- For more detailed instructions on how to find these settings on your computer, visit our
Wireless
website.
- For convenience, the most common settings which should get many wireless users on our network
are as follows:
-
-
Network Registration (NetReg): Once you have either connected your wired
connection to a LetNet jack or correctly configured your wireless card for access, if you bring up
a web browser on your computer you will notice that any website you attempt to visit will take you
to LeTourneau's user registration system at
http://netreg.letnet.net. In order to gain full access to
LeTourneau's network and the Internet, you must register your computer with our registration
system.
- To Activate the registration process, simply click on "Register my Computer" on the NetReg page to be taken through the registration process. When this process is complete, you may need to reboot your computer to gain full access to LetNet and the Internet.
- Network Utilization (Bandwdith): LeTourneau provides each residential student 5GB of data transfer each month as part of their residential network service. Students may choose to purchase higher tiers of service if they anticipate a need to use bandwidth more heavily. Upgraded internet tier plans can be purchased from the University cashier. More details about bandwidth plans is available from the bandwidth plan document.
How to connect your Phone and setup Voicemail
-
Phone services are provided in each residence hall room via one physical phone
port. However, each room has two active phone numbers, one for each resident. Each phone number
rings to the single room jack, and if not answered, can be configured to forward to a private
voicemail box for that student.
- How to identify a LetNet phone jack: Phone jacks in residence halls are either green or have a green plastic identifier above them. In most residence halls, phone jacks will be labeled with a "V". In some residence halls such as the quads, the phone jack will be port "B". Connect a standard phone cor into the jack to connect your phone. You should receive dial tone in the handset immediately.
- You may use your choice of long-distance calling cards from your room's phone jack to make long-distance calls. Long Distance services and other toll-calls cannot be directly charged to your room phone number.
- For more information about residence hall phones at LeTourneau please visit the Residence Hall Analog Phone website.
-
Voicemail services at LeTourneau are integrated with our campus email system. Each
student has a voicemail box associated with their personal phone extension. Voicemails left will be
available both via the phone, as well as delivered into your email inbox as a .wav attachment.
- Complete step-by-step instructions for setting up your voicemail box are available by clicking here.
- If your phone number is not forwarding to the voicemail system when it is not answered, please dial *53999 from your phone, hang up, and then dial *63999 and hang up. This will send all phone calls you do not answer or which return a busy signal to the voicemail system.
- Once you have setup your voicemail box, you may change your settings including your greetings at any time either via the phone interface or via the web at https://voicemail.letnet.net
How to connect your Television
-
Television services in each residence hall rooms are provided via a single coaxial
cable jack (which looks like the graphic to the left). To connect your television, connect a
standard coaxial patch cable from your TV's coax jack to the LeTourneau coax jack in your room.
- If you and your roommate wish to each setup a TV, you will need a coax splitter. These are available at any major retailer.
- LeTourneau provides a package of nearly 40 basic television channels to residential students. No premium or pay-per-view channels are available. For a complete list of the current channels offered click here to visit the Television Services website.
