Corey Thomaston enters his second season as the LeTourneau University head
women's basketball coach.
Thomaston is the fourth head coach in the program’s history. His first year
at LeTourneau was a great learning experience for the first time head coach. He was hired
late in the summer giving him little time to recruit. He inherited a 4-win team and while the
win total only increased by two, there were a number of positive signs. The team's defense
and rebounding dramatically improved and a number building blocks were put in place for the
program. Additionally, the team had six members named to the ASC Academic Honor Roll and
earned the ASC SAAC Team Sportsmanship Award
Previously, he has served as an assistant coach for the NCAA Division I Radford University
women’s basketball program from 2002-07. He was a key component is helping turn the Radford
program around and reaching the Big South Championship game for the first time in 11 seasons.
Thomaston assumed many different roles at Radford working under head coach Jeri
Porter. He began as a recruiting director who worked with the guards and continued to add
more duties. He assisted with the introduction of Jeri Porter’s ‘Next Level’ basketball camp
and began to reestablish Radford’s alumni base. In 2005-06, he started to work with the post
players and he has had three different players earn All-Conference recognition and a Defensive
Player of the Year honor. His post players have continually ranked in the top five in the
conference in most key statistics.
In addition to his on court coaching expertise, Thomaston has also shown a strong ability to
recruit excellent players. His first three recruiting classes at RU produced five members of
the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team, including the 2005 Freshman of the Year.
Before coaching at Radford, Thomaston served as an assistant coach at the University of
North Alabama for two years under Porter.
Thomaston graduated from UNA in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications and
then continued his education earning a Master of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education from
UNA in 2002.
Thomaston teaches in the Kinesiology department. He and his wife, Bevin, reside in
Longview with their 2-year old son, Cooper.
