Doug Carter, the 2005-06 ASC East Division Men's Coach of the Year, has quickly made his mark on the LeTourneau University Tennis program.  His aggresive recruiting has brought in a number of top notch players to East Texas and they are quickly making their mark on the program.

In three short years, Carter has taken both his men's and women's teams from bottom dwellers in the ASC to conference championship contenders.  Both squad set school records for wins in 2006-07 as the men's team went 16-12 and the women's team went 12-16.  Each team advanced to the ASC Playoffs.

On the women's side of things, Carter's players have earned six ASC East Division Player of the Week honors, seven all-ASC East Division players and nine ASC Academic Honor Roll members.

The men's team has been had six players earn ASC East Division Player of the Week honors, nine all-ASC East Division players including his first First Teamer, Mark Taylor, and 10 ASC Academic Honor Roll members.

Carter was born and raised in Gilmer, Texas. He is a 1990 graduate of Gilmer High School and was an honors graduate (Cum Laude) from Texas A&M University-Commerce with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology.

Carter was a strong junior player, with an overall win-loss record of 94-16 during his years at GHS. During the time, Gilmer had one of the strongest high school tennis programs in Texas. Active in the United States Tennis Association, he was ranked as a junior player in the Texas Section and now as an adult has been ranked in the top 5 of Texas in doubles. Coach Carter is a member of the ITA, USTA, USPTA, and TTCA.

After high school, Carter attended Kilgore College, studying Secondary Education. He moved to Arlington and took a job in banking after marriage and then started working in corporate sales. During this time, God started opening doors that led Doug into Sports Ministry back home in Gilmer, at the First United Methodist Church. He started getting the chance to give tennis lessons again and became heavily involved in the state tour again. The heavy involvement with the young people got his teaching juices flowing and so he went back to school to finish his degree.

“God has led me here to LeTourneau University where I can use my talents to help build a championship tennis program at a wonderful Christian school. It’s been a real dream come true for me! We have an amazing campus, beautiful facilities, supportive fans and administration…with all that, I am excited about the winning tradition we can build here at LeTourneau,” said Carter.

Carter is trying to help rebuild the junior tennis program here in Longview and the surrounding areas. Carter shared, “Tennis was so strong around Longview when I was growing up. It was strong in the little towns. I want to see that again and I want to see LeTourneau University as the tennis center for the Longview area.”

Carter and his son, Corin, live in Gilmer.
