Introducing Dr. Gregory Frederick - last semester, he became Department Chair of biology at LETU, and he's already taking the program to new heights. Next year, partnering with Howard Hughes Medical Institute, his general biology class will participate in a world-class research program that may be able to help with the problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. #FacultyFriday [Link: incrediblyletu.blogspot.com] (25 likes; 4 comments)

LETU, round two could be in store for the Filian family! We met Kirsten, an '87 medical technology grad and her son, James, today during the YellowJacket Preview. Kirsten, now a pharmacist, said she's enjoyed seeing how we've expanded, catching up with former professors, and seeing children of fellow alumni on campus as students. James, who plans to study computer science and/or engineering, said he's impressed with our campus and really enjoyed the computer science class he was able to attend today. Our “Aviator of The Week” is Waco, TX native Marcus Miller. Marcus is a “Transfer Freshman Sophomore thingy” and an Air Traffic Management major. He loves all of his aviation classes, and his favorite thing about LeTourneau is having classes at the airport, and working at the S. E. Belcher Jr. LeTourneau University Center. Marcus has many achievements including the Best New Play of 2014: “Stiff”- DFW Critics Forum Awards, International Honor Thespian, and Nationally qualifying Duet Musical act presented at the International Thespian Society Convention in Lincoln, Nebraska. After graduating Marcus plans to become an FAA Center or Local air traffic controller. His favorite Bible passage is Psalms 126 verse 5 through Psalms 127. In his free time Marcus is directing LeTourneau’s Stage Right production of The Tall Stranger. When asked about advice to other students, Marcus shares a great message that we can all benefit from whether we are current students, former students, or even faculty and staff. “Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” I think God has put you here for a reason, and I believe that reason is to prepare you to enter a field where Jesus Christ is not easily recognizable. But when you dive deep and really apply yourself to flying, or to maintaining, or to controlling aircraft, you find that it really is through God that our workplace is allowed. And it is through you, that His light will shine to all the nations. What other job can you be in Dallas, Texas one day, and in less time than it would take you to drive from Dallas to El Paso, you can be in London, England? That is such an awesome benefit in being in the aviation workplace. The people you can reach over thousands of miles is unparalleled in any other job on the planet.” We are glad that God has brought you to LeTourneau Marcus, and we wish you the best as you finish your time here, and as you enter the work place afterwards to serve as a light in a world that longs to see the love of Jesus Christ. Congratulations and keep up the great work! [Link] (25 likes; 14 comments)

On March 27, 1996, Mr. Dale Crane was awarded the Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award. Mr. Crane was a founding father of LeTourneau University's Aviation program and is also the author of ASA (Aviation Supplies & Academics) Powerplant, Airframe, and General textbook series for Aircraft Maintenance Technicians. Mr. Crane worked at LeTourneau from 1958 to 1975. The Charles Taylor Master Mechanic Award, presented by the Federal Aviation Administration, is named in honor of Mr. Charles Taylor, the first aviation mechanic in powered flight. The Charles Taylor “Master Mechanic” Award recognizes the lifetime accomplishments of senior mechanics. Mr. Taylor served as the Wright brothers' mechanic and is credited with designing and building the engine for their first successful aircraft. #ThrowbackThursday [Link] (13 likes)

LeTourneau Aviation proudly presents our “Aviator of The Week”. This week’s Aviator is an Associate Professor of the School of Aviation and Aeronautical Science. He has spent 26 years in aviation maintenance and management. He has a wonderful wife Sally, who is also employed by the university. He has been with LETU for the last ten years. Mr. Matt Poelman has quite a resume that has led him far and wide where he has gained valuable experiences to bring to our students at LeTourneau University. Mr. Poelman has worked for many companies including Omniflight Helicopters, Inc., General Aviation Corporation, Blackhawk International Airways, Jungle Aviation And Radio Service, and Midwest Airlines. He also has many degrees including an Associate’s degree of Science in Aviation Technology from LeTourneau University, a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration from Cardinal Stritch University, and a Master’s in Aeronautical Science with concentrations in Education Technology and safety from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. Mr. Polman has worked many positions and served on many committees and boards throughout his years in aviation including being the project manager for the Boeing Company 717 acquisition at Midwest Airlines for the Maintenance and Engineering Departments. The death of a favorite instructor and friend in 2002, Marty Donner, prompted Mr. Poelman to send in a resume to become a part of the LETU aviation faculty. He wanted to make the kind of impact on young people that Mr. Donner had made on him. His favorite thing about LeTourneau is our unique combination of practical skills training and whole person development from a Christian worldview. Mr. Poelman’s favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11. When asked about what advice he had for students, Mr. Poelman says “Read Jeremiah 29:11; it reflects the heart of God toward us and will be an encouragement. Also, work on the combination of humility coupled with boldness for our Lord’s Kingdom. Humility is the understanding of our position toward our Creator; it brings God’s favor. Boldness on His behalf is the outworking and evidence of our faith, without which, it is impossible to please Him. Students have more influence than they realize, I encourage them to use it to bring others into a relationship with God. The Word of God will never become stale or irrelevant when you are talking about the good news of Christ to others.” Mr. Poelman’s favorite aircraft in our fleet is the Beechcraft King Air in our boneyard with two working PT6 Turbine Engines. Mr. Poelman also has three sons, and he will celebrate his 35th wedding anniversary this April. Mr. Poelman closes his interview with these final words: "I believe it will become more and more difficult for a Christian university to operate in this current culture. It will take courage and determination to remain committed to scriptural principles in how we function. I want to be part of the team of men and women who have that kind of heart, that kind of commitment.” Thank you so much for all that you do for our students here at LeTourneau. It is professors like you that put in so much time and effort into everything that you do that make this University stand out above the rest. We are very lucky to have you here, and we know that you have played such an important part in the lives of so many throughout your time with us. Again, thank you, and congratulations!
