Assessment of Prior Learning for Credit
ASSESSMENT OF PRIOR LEARNING FOR CREDIT
LeTourneau University is among more than 500 colleges and universities that are involved in assessing students’ prior learning for academic credit that may be applied toward an undergraduate degree. The Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), an educational association founded in 1974 to promote the acceptance of the awarding of college credit for experiential learning, has led the way in developing and implementing assessment techniques. LeTourneau University uses the academic guidelines developed by CAEL and the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) in awarding credit to students who document prior learning as a means of receiving college credit for experiential learning.
Portfolio Process
The portfolio process enables the student to receive college credit for college-level documented learning which takes place outside the traditional classroom. Typical classroom environments that would support the portfolio process would include trade schools, business schools, professional schools, computer courses, and employer sponsored courses/training. Government regulated certifications/licenses and foreign language proficiencies may also be considered for college credit by portfolio.
Each portfolio submitted is evaluated by a university faculty member or academically qualified consultant. No grades are assigned; only credit is awarded.
Students desiring to receive college credit for learning gained through documented learning experiences must present documentation in portfolio format to the Portfolio Facilitator within the School of Graduate and Professional Studies at the closest Educational Center for evaluation. The portfolio evaluation process averages 4 to 6 weeks. Portfolio seminars are conducted regularly to provide guidance for students interested in documenting prior learning experiences.
Portfolios may be submitted at any of the following points in a student’s program:
1. Prior to entering LeTourneau’s adult program;
2. At least 60 days prior to completing Entry Point 1;
3. At least 60 days prior to completing Entry Point 2;
4. No later than one year after entering Entry Point 3 (Core Program). It is recommended that portfolios be submitted within one year after entering the undergraduate program in order to avoid unnecessary delays in meeting graduation requirements. Such delays may occur when the number of portfolio credits received is less than expected and additional coursework is required.
In compliance with appropriate policies and filing dates for graduation, portfolios submitted to receive credit to meet graduation requirements must be received by the following deadlines:
| Graduation Month: | Submission Deadline: | |
| December | October 1st | |
| May | February 1st | |
| August | February 1st |
A student must be registered in the adult program at LeTourneau
University for portfolio consideration. A maximum of 30 hours may be
earned through the portfolio process, with a maximum of 20 hours available in
one topic area. All portfolio charges must be paid in full before hours
earned are placed onto a LeTourneau University transcript.
Fees for the Portfolio Process:
| Initial Processing Fee | ............................. | $75 Per Submission |
| Hours Earned Through Portfolio | ............................. | $50 Per Semester Hour |
Fees must be paid in full. Partial payment for credit received will result in forfeiture of any remaining credit awarded through portfolio. An addendum to a portfolio previously submitted by a student may be provided for additional credit. The above fees are applicable for each addendum to portfolio submitted. Portfolio fees are non-refundable.
Portfolio Handbooks include additional information regarding the process and may be obtained from an Admissions Representative, the Student Services Office, the Assessment Staff, or by visiting our website at www.letu.edu. (See Adult Programs; Student Services; Portfolio).
