Footprints of R.G. LeTourneau

As part of the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Engineering and Science Center, LeTourneau students, faculty and staff got a rare chance to take a close look at a LeTourneau L-1100 front-end loader.

The L-1100 sports a 1050 or 1200 HP Diesel engine, and has a carrying capacity of 33 tons. Each wheel is powered by an individual electric motor, in the fashion pioneered by R.G. LeTourneau. The mobility and adaptability of the L-1100 have made it a popular workhorse in mining operations around the world. More information is available at http://www.letourneau-inc.com/l1100.htm.
Those who stayed after the ceremony also got a brief chance to see the L-1100 in motion, as a crew returned it to the LeTourneau plant.

Mr. William Fritts, of Olympia, Washington, was kind enough to share some photos of LeTourneau equipment he took on a recent trip to Alaska. He writes...

The pictures below are of the Alaska Freight Line Train May 1998. It now sets beside the Alaskan Pipeline Pumping Station #13 on the Steese Hiway outside Fairbanks AK. I was told that this one was used to haul supplies the North Slopes when they were building the Pipeline, date wise I'm not sure. It stands beside other equipment that was also used on the North Slope. To stand beside a large piece of history and see what was done by the LeTourneau Company was amazing. I was glad that it was put by the pumping station for more people to see.

These pictures are of the Overland Train (as written on the side in picture #007) May 1998. It sets now in a salvage yard right behind FT. Wainwright, AK.(Fairbanks). This one had the 10 foot tall wheels and still had the Generators in it. The frame was hinged between the 1st and 2nd compartments since the wheels did not steer. There was also one of the ten trailers in the yard. Sorry I did get any pictures of the trailer, but it too was amazing to see. I felt bad that this one was not being placed with the Alaska Freight Line Train so the History of both the PIPELINE and LeTourneau Company's part in the building of the Pipeline could be saved. I wish that there was some way I could get this done.
