The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International holds an annual competition named the International Aerial Robotics Competition. In order to win, a team's vehicle must complete these four objectives autonomously, without human intervention:

    • Fly three kilometers along a specified path of GPS waypoints.
    • Search a target area for a marked building; identify the openings and their centers. >/LI>
    • Enter the building and document specific aspects within its interior.
    • Complete the previous three goals consecutively in less than 15 minutes.

The competition is held at the McKenna Urban Operations Site, designed to offer us US Army and other groups facilities to conduct training exercises, test new equipment, and experiment with new aerial and ground platforms. The site has 430 acres in which to maneuver, including a 3700- foot runway and a helicopter-landing pad. The actual site contains 15 European style urban structures ranging from 1-3 stories
