Guidelines for M.Ed. Admissions Essays

Graduate admissions essays are read and considered by the Graduate Admissions Committee. For students to gain acceptance into LeTourneau University’s graduate program, they should have strong essays that reflect the high quality of work and thought that they will bring to the classroom. Students should make a serious effort to submit a strong essay, since they may be denied acceptance based upon a weak essay.

Things to Consider

A well-done essay has the following characteristics:

  • It is reflective. The essay shows that the writer has the ability to consider, analyze, and learn from past experience.
  • It shows professionalism. The reader pictures someone neatly groomed, pleasant, and competent when reading the essay. It is not a casual email or text conversation with someone.
  • It addresses all points of the prompt. The ability to follow directions and focus your answer to address the question is essential to succeed in higher education.
  • It is organized well. The writer’s ideas are presented in such a way as to make sense to the reader.
  • It contains smooth transitions. The reader does not get lost due to thoughts that do not flow well together.
  • The writing is clear. The reader does not have to guess what the writer is saying or try to figure out the point that the writer is trying to make. Good word choice and phrasing are important elements for clarity.
  • It is grammatically correct. It is very important to proofread for grammatical and spelling errors prior to submission. This is a formal essay that reflects a prospective graduate student’s ability to think and write. Grammatical and spelling errors distract from the essay’s content.

A well-done essay avoids the following elements:

  • unnecessary repetition
  • too much extraneous information
  • extensive grammatical and spelling errors
