The Planeterella - An Aurora in a Bottle

Abstract

The Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a result of electromagnetic and physical chemistry processes which create spectacular light shows in the upper atmosphere above the polar caps of earth and other planets. These processes can be recreated in a lab environment for public demonstrations and scientific research using the Planeterrella experiment which involves plasma interacting with a magnetic field. This experiment was created at the NASA Langley Research Center through the LARSS internship program during the Summer of 2013. Through the Planeterrella, many interesting realms of space science can be explored and visualized to the general public such as the Interplanetary Magnetic Field, Magnetospheric Physics, Atmospheric Physics, and Planetary Physics as well impressing the importance and excitement of Space Weather Research.
