Harold grew up in Northeastern Ohio in several United Methodist parsonages with one younger brother and one younger sister. He calls Canton, Ohio his home town. Harold’s father, grandfather and younger brother have all been pastors.
Gwen grew up in Newport News, Virginia. Her mother is the organist at Hampton Friends Church and her father was an engineer for Newport New Shipbuilding. She lived in the same house all of her childhood.
Harold and Gwen both attended Malone College. Harold majored in music education (trumpet). Gwen majored in chemistry and Christian ministries. Harold played in several musical groups in college and even played for tips in local restaurants.
The Carls are both in their 40's (no more information available on that one).
They have been married 25 years as of June 7, 2005. They have a 12-year-old son Joshua who loves all sports and has played YMCA baseball and church league basketball. Joshua is also an avid caver and snorkeler. Joshua delights in designing football plays and battle scenarios for all kinds of warfare. Gwen home-schools Joshua. Joshua is in the 7th grade this year.
In the winter of 2000 Harold and Gwen became certified open water SCUBA divers. They have been diving in Jamaica, Bahamas, the Gulf of Mexico and Florida. In May 2003 they dove wrecks and oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. In spring of 2005 Joshua also became a Jr. SSI scuba diver.
Harold loves caving, SCUBA, playing guitar and singing for worship, playing blues guitar, playing jazz trumpet, and working on electronic projects.
Gwen loves SCUBA, cross-stitch, reading, logic puzzles and entertaining people in the Carls' home. Hardly a week goes by that they do not have students over for dinner and fun.
In the summer of 2004 the Carl family traveled to mainland China and Hong Kong for three weeks. The first week they spent on vacation, visiting the Great Wall of China, Beijing, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xian. The second week Harold taught Christology at United Wesleyan Graduate Institute, an OMS seminary in Hong Kong. The third week, Harold traveled with a translator and two Chinese seminary students to a remote region of mainland China where he led a training course for house church leaders. Harold also travels regularly to Mexico for short term missions trips.
