LeTourneau University will host the Quingdao Orchestra, a Chinese folk orchestra from Qingdao University of Science and Technology, at 10:50 a.m. on Monday, March 3, in the S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center, 2100 S. Mobberly Ave., in Longview. The orchestral performance is free and open to the public.
Qingdao Orchestra includes about 30 music performance undergraduates directed by Mrs. Sun Pei Shan and conducted by Mr. Liu Jia. The orchestra performs a variety of traditional Chinese folk music and compositions from modern Chinese composers, as well as classical European and popular American compositions.
Performances use traditional Chinese instruments, including guzhengs, erhus, shengs and pipas. The orchestra has performed over 30 concerts for international audiences, including the U.S., Germany, Italy, Belgium, France, Israel and Korea. Qingdao Orchestra has a growing reputation for artistic excellence and provides an opportunity for international cultural exchange.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to build relationships with these visitors from China,” said LETU Chaplain Dr. Harold Carl. “We look forward to their music and international friendship.”
