I am working from behind a firewall. Is it possible for me to use Blackboard's chat functionality?

Yes. You just need to make sure that your firewall is not restricting outgoing TCP connections of port 7755 or HTTP connections on port 8081. If you are on an off-campus network, your network administrator would be able to check this for you.
