I am receiving the error "One or more rules could not be uploaded to Exchange server" when attempting to create a new rule in Outlook or LetNet Webmail. How can I fix this?

There is a limit on the size of rules which clients can upload to the Exchange Server. Most individuals will not encounter this limitation even with many rules. However, the following information describes ways to reduce the size of rules as much as possible in order to fit more rules in on your mailbox:

Microsoft Exchange Server has a maximum limit of 64 kilobytes (KB) for storage of rules. Rules vary in size, but some rules can be significantly larger when they involve multiple recipients in a forward or sender email address check action. Each recipient can add up to 500 bytes to the size of the rule. As a rough estimate, the simplest rules take from 200 to 500 bytes. Rules involving recipients add approximately 500 bytes per recipient. A rule that forwards a message to five recipients can be over 3 KB in size.

Also rules addressing recipients by full display names along with email addresses use up rule space (i.e. Jack Jones (j.jones@jones.net) is better referenced as simply j.jones@jones.net). overall, the size of the names in rules as well as the names of the rules themselves contribute to overall rule size.

Additional tips for reducing the size of rules:

• Rename rules to have shorter names
• Ensure only base email addresses are in rules (no "display names")
• Remove unnecessary rules completely (don't just deactivate them)
• Combine similar rules into one rule.
