Mathematics (MATH) Department of Mathematics and Computer Science MATH 0103 Introductory Algebra Covers beginning algebra with an emphasis on the development of algebraic skills. Includes a review of the real numbers and moves into solving equations, factoring, graphing equations, inequalities, systems of equations, solving fractional equations, and radical notations. Required of all students whose ACT/SAT scores indicate deficiency in algebra. Not applicable to graduation requirements. Class 3. MATH 1123 Intermediate Algebra A study of algebra beginning with signed numbers through quadratic equations, including algebraic expressions, factoring, linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, and systems of equations in two variables. Required of all students whose ACT/SAT scores indicate deficiency in algebra. Not applicable to graduation requirements for any B. S. degree. Class 3. MATH 1203 College Algebra With Applications A study of linear and quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, and linear inequalities with emphasis on business applications. This course may not be taken for credit by anyone who has passed MATH 1303, MATH 1603, or MATH 1903 with a grade of C or better. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1123 or equivalent. MATH 1252 Trigonometry A study of the trigonometric functions, identities, solving triangles, inverse trigonometric functions, and complex numbers. Class 2. Prerequisite: MATH 1123 or equivalent. MATH 1303 Precalculus A study of polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and rational functions, systems of equations and inequalities, sequences, series, and analytic geometry, including a review of algebra. This course may not be taken by anyone who has passed MATH 1603 or MATH 1903 with a grade of C or better. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1123 or equivalent. MATH 1423 Elementary Statistics An introductory treatment of research statistics. Included are frequency distribution, graphic representation, correlation, sampling theory, probability, and statistical hypotheses. Not applicable to graduation requirements in mathematics or engineering. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1123 or equivalent. MATH 1503 Calculus With Business Applications A study of differential calculus and its application to business. This course may not be taken for credit by anyone who has passed MATH 1603 or MATH 1903 with a grade of C or better. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1203. (Spring) MATH 1603 Technical Calculus I An introduction to calculus including analytic geometry, limits, derivatives, applications of derivatives, applications of antiderivatives, and the definite integral. Not applicable for degree requirements in mathematics or engineering. This course may not be taken for credit by anyone who has passed MATH 1903 with a grade of C or better. Class 3. Prerequisites: MATH 1252 and MATH 1303, or equivalent. (Fall) MATH 1613 Technical Calculus II A continuation of MATH 1603 including applications of the definite integral, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions, integration techniques, and improper integrals. Not applicable for degree requirements in mathematics or engineering. This course may not be taken for credit by anyone who has passed MATH 2013 with a grade of C or better. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1603. (Spring) MATH 1803 Discrete Mathematics Topics include set theory, relations, propositional logic and proofs, algebraic structure, graph theory, and Boolean algebra. Techniques of proof introduced include proof by specialization and division into cases, indirect proof, existence and uniqueness proofs, and induction. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1203 or equivalent. MATH 1903 Calculus I An introduction to calculus with emphasis on concepts and principles. Topics studied include limits, derivatives, applications of derivatives, and the definite integral. Class 3. Prerequisites: MATH 1252 and MATH 1303, or equivalent. MATH 2013 Calculus II A continuation of MATH 1903 including techniques and applications of integration, polar coordinates, parametric equations, and vectors. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1903. MATH 2023 Calculus III A continuation of MATH 2013 including sequences and series, partial derivatives, multiple integrals, vector fields, line integrals, and Green's Theorem. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 2013. MATH 2203 Differential Equations Solutions, properties, and applications of ordinary differential equations, including the use of Laplace transforms and Fourier series. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1613 or MATH 2013. MATH 3203 Introduction To Modern Algebra Introduction to algebraic structures including groups, rings, and fields and an axiomatic study of mathematics. Continuing study of sets, mappings, binary operations, matrices, relations, and integers. Class 3. Prerequisites: MATH 1603 or MATH 1903, and MATH 1803. (Fall) MATH 3303 Linear Algebra A study of systems of linear equations, matrices, vector spaces, linear independence, bases, dimension, linear transformations, determinants, eigenvalues, and geometric applications. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1603 or MATH 1903. MATH 3403 Statistics A study of elementary concepts and techniques of statistics including representations of data, statistical measures, fundamentals of probability, distribution laws, and statistical tests. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 2013. MATH 3503 Mathematical Concepts Mathematical concepts such as probability, statistics, geometric constructions, measurement, ratio and proportion, prealgebra, and basic tests and measurements concepts including interpretation of data. Use of manipulatives in learning mathematical concepts. Only applicable to graduation requirements of elementary education students. Class 3. Prerequisite: Math 1123 or equivalent. (Spring) MATH 3553 Math Practicum This course will teach techniques for enhancing the learning of mathematics. The techniques will include topics such as the use of manipulatives, the use of calculators, the use of internet resources, and other procedures to augment the problem solving nature of mathematics. Only applicable to graduation requirements of education students. Class 3. Prerequisites: Math 1123 or higher and admission to the Teacher Education Program. (Fall) MATH 4103 Real Analysis A more rigorous study of topics beyond the intermediate level from the calculus including the real number system, point sets, functions, sequences, limits, continuity and uniform continuity, differentiation, indeterminate forms, and the Riemann integral. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 3203. (Fall, Odd years) MATH 4303 College Geometry A careful axiomatic development of certain important parts of elementary Euclidian and nonEuclidian geometry. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 1603 or MATH 1903. (Fall, Even years) MATH 4403 Numerical Analysis A study of topics from methods of finding zeros of functions, approximation of functions by polynomials, finite differences, numerical integration, solutions of systems of linear equations, numerical solutions of differential equations, and roundoff error analysis. Class 3. Prerequisites: COSC 1303 and either MATH 1613 or MATH 2013. (Fall) MATH 4503 Statistical Quality Assurance The application of statistics to industrial processes including: statistical measures, histogram analysis, construction and analysis of control charts of variables and attributes, acceptance sampling plans, statistical aspects of tolerances, and fundamentals of experimental design. The principles of Deming are emphasized. Class 3. Prerequisite: MATH 3403 with a minimum grade of B or permission of instructor. (Spring) MATH 49414993 Special Topics This course consists of one topic (or possibly more) from the following group: vector analysis, point set topology, real analysis, complex variables, number theory, mathematical statistics, logic, design of experiments, history of mathematics, abstract algebra, or other topics. This course may be taken more than one time when the topics are different. Class 13. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
